Role Purpose

Underwriting & Pricing decides which risks Homeprotect takes on and what we charge for them, one of the company's most strategically important and technically demanding domains. The team owns the pricing and rating engines, underwriting rules, risk appetite logic and quote calculation services that sit behind every quote Homeprotect generates. It's a domain where precision matters: a small error in a calculation or a rule can have a real commercial impact, so rigorous testing and careful handling of change are part of the job, not an afterthought.

Our rating, pricing and underwriting system gives us the largest quote footprint in the market: we're able to quote on over 95% of enquiries, well above the industry norm of around 60%. The systems this team builds and maintains are what make that possible.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead technical delivery within this team and raise the capability of the engineers around them. You'll take ownership of complex, calculation-intensive systems, make sound architectural decisions with minimal guidance, and be a trusted technical voice in a domain where correctness and rigor matter as much as delivery speed.

Success in this role means the systems you own are reliable, accurate and easy for others to build on, and the engineers around you are visibly better because you're on the team.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

· Proven experience as a senior software engineer, owning delivery of complex systems or cross-functional technical initiatives, not just individual features.

· Strong track record of making sound architectural and design decisions with minimal guidance, and clearly explaining the reasoning behind them.

· Experience mentoring and raising the technical capability of other engineers, through code review, pairing and everyday coaching.

· Comfortable working with rules-heavy, calculation-intensive systems, where correctness and rigorous testing matter as much as delivery speed.

· Strong hands-on experience in at least one modern backend language, such as C# or Java (or a comparable object-oriented language).

· Deep, hands-on understanding of modern software engineering practices: continuous integration and deployment, automated testing, observability and cloud-native development.

· Experience operating production systems, in a public cloud environment such as Azure or GCP, that need to be reliable, secure and performant.

· Strong communication skills, able to build trust with both engineers and non-technical colleagues.

Desirable

· Experience in general insurance, financial services or another regulated industry.

· Understanding of pricing, underwriting, actuarial or risk modelling concepts.

· Familiarity with Python, useful for working closely with Actuarial and data science colleagues on pricing and risk models.

· Experience with data-heavy backend systems, for example processing large volumes of quotes or transactions efficiently.

· Exposure to event-driven or distributed systems.

· Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to improve engineering productivity.
