Brent’s diversity is evident to all who visit our borough and our long history of ethnic and cultural diversity has created a place that is truly unique and valued by those who live and work here.

The council is pursuing a far-reaching transformation agenda that better meets the needs of our community so it is an exciting time to join us.

The Post

In our Financial Litigation Team we are looking to recruit a Senior Lawyer to support our Principal and Chief lawyer.

The Senior Lawyer will manage a caseload of debt recovery matters working with a wide range of client departments within the council. This often requires instigation of county court proceedings against debtors and enforcement of Judgment. Ample knowledge of the civil procedure rules and practice is therefore essential. Good knowledge of recovery of debt, arrears of ASC fees and enforcement will be helpful.

The successful candidate will:

• Actively support the management of the department;

  • Assist the Chief and Principal Lawyer with the day to day running of the team and supervision of junior staff;
  • Consider and investigate matters referred to the legal team and allocate to caseworkers within the team in accordance with expertise;
  • Consider and respond promptly to requests for advice and research from client departments;
  • Request and obtain further information and documentation from various client departments, acknowledge referrals and advise on the merit of the case;
  • Take prompt action in the debt recovery process;
  • Engage in dispute resolution and explore alternative methods of settlement such as mediation;
  • Instruct Counsel and costs draftsman when necessary;
  • Manage a caseload of debt recovery matters, instigating and defending claims against the council;
  • Advise client departments and respond to queries on disputed matters;
  • Using the council’s case management systems efficiently. Training is available.

The Person

We are looking for an organised, proactive and flexible team player. The Senior Lawyer should demonstrate good leadership skills, aptitude and the ability to quickly pick up and progress a wide range of cases. The position holder will report to the Principal and Chief Lawyer in the team.
