Our research is engaged, at the frontier of practice and has a positive impact on the world around us.** Background We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join the Cardiovascular Research Institute at City St. George’s, University of London, a world-leading centre for investigating the causes of sudden cardiac death in the young. This 18-month post is funded by a Springboard grant from the Academy of Medical Sciences and British Heart Foundation. The project aims to characterise and validate novel genes for Brugada syndrome using zebrafish models, which have recently emerged as an important experimental platform for this arrhythmia disease.

** Responsibilities The main responsibilities of this role will be to design CRISPR-mediated gene knockdown of zebrafish orthologues for novel putative Brugada genes and undertake functional analyses to assess the effect of these knockdowns on heart function. You will also be expected to implement new techniques and optimize protocols critical to the project and provide technical expertise and input for troubleshooting of experiments. It is expected that you will work with limited supervision and contribute to data analysis and interpretation.

** Person Specification We are looking for a person with a PhD in molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline. You should have practical expertise with gene editing methodologies and extensive direct experience of zebrafish husbandry techniques and the development of zebrafish disease models. You should also have experience in designing and executing functional assays for evaluating the effects of gene mutations, as well as excellent technical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.

This post is offered on a permanent contract subject to fixed-term funding, reflecting the University’s commitment to providing greater stability for research staff. The role is funded through external research funding, which is currently confirmed until 31 March 2028 with possibility of extension to an 18 months position. Continued employment in this role will therefore be subject to the continuation or replacement of funding.
