Trustees play a vital role in setting strategic direction, safeguarding the Museum’s values and ensuring long term sustainability.

About the Role

We are now seeking to recruit a Chair to succeed Keith Ludeman OBE in March 2027.

As Chair, you will also be an Independent non-executive Trustee on the Board and holds the overarching responsibility to ensure that LTM’s charitable objectives are met and that the Museum continues on a path to be fit for the future.

You will lead a passionate, active and highly skilled Board.

You will support the CEO and her leadership team to deliver the ambitious LTM50 Capital Project and ‘Future Fit’ vision focusing the direction of work on the areas of content, experiences, people, and growth to secure our long-term financial sustainability.

You will be well connected and provide powerful and far-reaching advocacy of the museum’s ambitious sponsorship, partnership and procurement opportunities enhanced by its charity status and be willing to bring in new relationships.

You will be an active champion of our fundraising efforts, helping extract the maximum value of all funding grants and the charity status, such as the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council and supporting the development of major donors.

You will provide the strategic stewardship for the efficient administration of the museum working with wider TfL stakeholders at the highest tiers.

Key responsibilities

The Chair’s overall responsibility is to lead the charity’s board of trustees, ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the charity.

• Provide leadership and guidance to the board of trustees (as the governing body of the charity) in its role of setting the direction and strategy of the charity.
• Understand the respective roles of Chair and CEO to ensure they work collaboratively to the maximum benefit of the Museum. Act as line manager to the CEO.
• Work closely with the CEO to implement the museum’s vision and support the National Portfolio Arts Council process.
• Ensure that the board of trustees deploys the charity’s resources to further the charitable purposes for the public benefit and in accordance with legal requirements.
• Ensuring that board meetings are conducted in an orderly fashion and in accordance with the constitution.

What we are looking for

We are seeking an exceptional individual with relevant expertise to influence, shape and drive forward the Museum’s vision and mission as an education and heritage charity.

To succeed, you will need a track record of strategic leadership as Chair and/or Chief Executive or Leader of high-profile businesses, with a strong focus on London.

You will have gained experience as a charity trustee and possess strong communication skills, with the ability to influence high-level stakeholders at the highest tiers of government.

The Chair of the LTM Trustees will be appointed by the board and requires the approval of the TfL Commissioner.

We're seeking an experienced and collaborative leader who brings:

• Previous Chair, Trustee, Board or Chief Executive of a medium sized business or charity.
• Strong understanding of charity governance, risk management and strategic leadership
• An Interest and passion in museums, heritage, education, transport or design and an understanding of the challenges in the arts and culture sector
• A genuine commitment to the equity, diversity and inclusion and broadening the diversity of our workforce and Board
• Diplomacy whilst maintaining the independence of the charity.
• An ability to with the CEO to open new doors, relationships and opportunities, e.g. major donors, business growth.

Terms of appointment

This role is a voluntary role and as such is unremunerated.

Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be covered.

2-3 days per month

The Museum is a subsidiary company of TfL with charity status (charity no. 1123122). We have a Trustee Board of thirteen, three of whom are nominated by TfL, ten are independent trustees appointed by the Chair including the Museum Director and CEO. The entrepreneurial strategy and activities of the Museum are vested in the Enterprise Board, a subsidiary trading company (company no.6495761) of LTM.
