As a Graduate Software Engineer, you will help develop software-centric capabilities that enable mission success in some of the most demanding operational environments. From day one, you will contribute to live projects and help deliver software that supports critical UK defence capabilities.

Working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team, you will design, develop, test and integrate software solutions. You will apply Agile and DevSecOps approaches throughout the software lifecycle, learning from experienced engineers and technical specialists as you solve complex customer challenges.

Our Graduate Programme

Our structured two-year Graduate Programme is designed to help you turn your academic knowledge and coding experience into practical software engineering expertise.

Starting in September 2027, the programme combines on-the-job learning with technical, professional and leadership development. There may also be opportunities to rotate across projects, giving you exposure to different types of work and helping you explore your technical interests.

You will have a dedicated mentor, buddy, project lead and line manager, providing guidance and support throughout your development. From the beginning, you will contribute to meaningful work while learning from experienced engineers and technical specialists.

What you’ll do

• Contribute to software development projects within multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Design, develop, test and integrate software solutions
• Apply Agile and DevSecOps approaches throughout the software development lifecycle
• Participate in technical reviews and collaborative team activities
• Learn from experienced engineers and technical specialists
• Help deliver mission-critical capabilities for UK defence customers

Along the way, you could develop experience in:

• Software architecture and object-oriented design
• Java, C++ and other object-oriented programming languages
• Application development and systems engineering
• Cloud technologies and modern distributed systems
• Microservice architectures, web development and open-source software
• DevSecOps tools and CI/CD pipelines
• Systems integration and Agile delivery
• Cybersecurity principles and secure defence environments
• Applied artificial intelligence capabilities

What we’re looking for

We are looking for graduates who are passionate about software development and computing, enjoy solving challenging problems and want to use technology to make a meaningful difference. You will bring an analytical approach, logical reasoning and the ability to contribute effectively within a collaborative engineering team.

Essential:

• A relevant degree, achieved or on target to be achieved, such as Software Engineering or Computer Science (or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills through work experience or other training)
• A genuine passion for software development and computing
• Experience writing software in one or more object-oriented programming languages, such as Java, C++, C# or a similar language
• An understanding of the software development lifecycle
• Strong analytical skills and logical reasoning
• The ability to solve problems in innovative ways
• The ability to deliver requirements within reasonably agreed timescales
• The potential to contribute to projects through to their conclusion
