About The Role
As Volta's General Counsel, you'll be the most senior legal voice in the business, advising our CEO, leadership team, and board on all legal matters affecting the company — from corporate governance and commercial contracts to regulatory compliance and risk. You'll build and lead the legal function as Volta scales, ensuring the business grows quickly without losing sight of legal and regulatory obligations.
This is a high-impact, high-visibility role for an experienced legal leader who wants to shape legal strategy at a company operating across multiple markets and regulatory environments.
What You Will Be Doing
- Serve as chief legal advisor to the CEO, leadership team, and board on all legal, regulatory, and governance matters
- Lead, structure, and grow the legal function, including hiring, managing, and developing legal team members as Volta scales
- Oversee the drafting, negotiation, and review of key commercial contracts, partnerships, and corporate agreements
- Manage legal risk across the organization, identifying potential exposure and developing strategies to mitigate it
- Oversee corporate governance matters, including board materials, resolutions, and entity management across jurisdictions
- Manage relationships with external counsel across relevant jurisdictions, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality legal support
- Partner with Compliance, Finance, and People teams to ensure the company's policies and practices meet legal and regulatory requirements
- Represent Volta in legal proceedings, disputes, or negotiations where necessary
- Advise on legal implications of new products, markets, and business initiatives as Volta expands globally
- Develop and maintain legal policies, procedures, and playbooks that enable the business to move quickly and confidently
What You Bring
- A Juris Doctor (JD), LLB, or equivalent law degree, and a license to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction
- 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience, ideally with time spent leading a legal function
- Strong background across corporate law, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance
- Proven experience building and managing a legal team, including managing outside counsel relationships
- Excellent judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with business pragmatism in a fast-moving environment
- Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills, comfortable advising C-suite and board-level audiences
- Experience operating across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory regimes
- High levels of integrity, discretion, and professionalism
