Role purpose

As Student.com expands across the US, we are looking for a talented and collaborative Developer with strong full stack experience to help build and improve the technology that supports our customers, partners and internal teams.

Working across front-end and back-end technologies, you will develop user-friendly interfaces, backend services, APIs and integrations. You will also help us apply AI across how we build software and within the products and workflows we deliver, including emerging agentic systems. Your work will support better customer experiences, more efficient operations and business growth.

This role combines new development with improvements to existing systems, offering meaningful input into technical decisions and how we deliver reliable, scalable solutions.

Business context

As the business grows, we need technology that reduces manual processes, improves data accuracy and connects our platforms effectively.

This role will help Student.com to:

  • Support revenue growth through new features and partner integrations.
  • Reduce manual administration through improved systems, automation and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Improve the accuracy, availability and flow of data across applications.
  • Improve the student experience from search through to booking.
  • Increase engineering delivery capacity, using AI across the software development lifecycle, and support a reliable, scalable platform.
  • Explore and deliver practical agentic solutions that automate multi-step processes for customers, partners and internal teams.

The role

You will work closely with the CTO, wider Engineering team and colleagues across Product, Design and Sales to translate business needs into practical technical solutions.

Your work will span the full technology stack, including customer-facing interfaces, backend services, databases, integrations and internal tools. You will contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from understanding requirements and scoping solutions through to implementation, testing, release and ongoing improvement.

AI is part of how we work at every stage of the software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and design through to coding, testing, code review, documentation, release and support. You will use these tools thoughtfully to support delivery while remaining responsible for the quality, security and accuracy of your work. You will also have the opportunity to build and operate agentic systems, where AI models use tools, call APIs and complete multi-step tasks within clear guardrails and with appropriate human oversight.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test and maintain applications across the full technology stack, including user interfaces, APIs, databases and business logic.
  • Build responsive, accessible and user-friendly front-end experiences, working with Product and Design colleagues to translate requirements into effective features.
  • Develop and maintain backend services that support application functionality, reliable data processing and business requirements.
  • Build and maintain APIs and integrations with partner platforms, payment providers, CRM systems and other third-party services.
  • Improve how data is captured, stored and shared across systems, supporting data quality, reporting and business insights and turning them into tangible benefits for our customers.
  • Develop internal tools and automate workflows to reduce manual tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Work with technical and non-technical colleagues to understand requirements, evaluate options and scope achievable solutions.
  • Improve the performance, reliability, security and maintainability of existing applications.
  • Investigate and resolve bugs, integration failures and other technical issues across front-end and back-end systems.
  • Write clear, maintainable code supported by appropriate testing and documentation.
  • Participate in code reviews, share knowledge and contribute to consistent development practices.
  • Support automated testing, deployment pipelines and release processes alongside the wider Engineering team.
  • Apply AI-assisted tools across the SDLC, including requirements refinement, design, coding, test generation, code review, debugging, documentation and release, reviewing and validating all outputs.
  • Help shape and share good practice for using AI in engineering, including prompting, context management, review standards, and security and data protection considerations.
  • Contribute to the design, build and operation of agentic systems and AI-enabled features, including integrating LLM APIs, tool and function calling, and connecting agents to internal and third-party systems.
  • Help put guardrails around AI-driven workflows, including evaluation and testing, monitoring, logging, cost control and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
  • Take ownership of agreed features and improvements from initial requirements through to release and ongoing support.

Skills and experienceEssential

  • Experience developing and maintaining software in a commercial environment, with practical experience across front-end and back-end development.
  • Strong JavaScript and/or TypeScript skills.
  • Experience building responsive web interfaces using a modern front-end framework, with a sound understanding of HTML, CSS, usability and accessibility.
  • Experience developing backend services, APIs and third-party integrations.
  • Understanding of databases, data modelling and the movement of data between systems.
  • Experience using version control, testing and code review practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills across the full application stack.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Understanding of application security, data protection, performance and reliability.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted tools across the software development lifecycle (for example coding assistants and agents for design, implementation, testing, review and documentation), with a considered approach to reviewing and validating generated output.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently on agreed tasks, take ownership and seek support when needed.

We are open to different technology backgrounds. We value sound technical judgement, an ability to learn and a track record of delivering quality software over familiarity with a particular framework.

Desirable

  • Exposure to building agentic or LLM-powered systems, such as tool use and function calling, retrieval-augmented generation, multi-step workflows, orchestration frameworks, or Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.
  • Understanding of the practical challenges of AI in production, including evaluation, prompt and output testing, observability, cost management, security risks such as prompt injection, and responsible use of data.
  • Experience with consumer-facing platforms, marketplaces, e-commerce, travel, booking or SaaS products.
  • Experience integrating payment, CRM, finance or other business systems.
  • Exposure to platforms such as Stripe, HubSpot or Xero.
  • Experience with cloud services, particularly AWS.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and monitoring tools.
  • Experience supporting reporting, analytics or data quality improvements.
  • Experience working in an international or growing technology business.

Personal attributes

  • Proactive: Identifies opportunities, takes initiative and keeps work moving.
  • Practical: Balances delivery speed with quality, security and long-term maintainability.
  • Collaborative: Shares knowledge, welcomes feedback and works well across teams.
  • Customer-focused: Understands how technical decisions affect students, partners and colleagues.
  • Accountable: Follows work through to completion and takes responsibility for outcomes, including for AI-generated work.
  • Adaptable: Works comfortably across new projects and existing systems as priorities and tools evolve.
  • Curious: Willing to learn, evaluate alternatives (including new AI tools and techniques) and improve how things are done.

What success looks like

Consistent delivery of well-tested features that work effectively across the front end and back end, alongside reliable integrations and measurable improvements to existing systems.

AI is used effectively and responsibly across the development lifecycle, raising delivery speed and quality, and you help move agentic and AI-enabled solutions from experiment to dependable production use.

Your work will help make Student.com's platforms easier to use and maintain, reduce manual administration and technical issues, and increase the Engineering team's capacity to deliver against business priorities.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including pension, healthcare, holidays, volunteering leave and a range of additional benefits designed to support your wellbeing.
