Consumer Sector Equity Analyst
Orbis
Consumer Sector Equity Analyst (London)
We are looking for an exceptional person to join our London-based Global Investment Team as an investment analyst, reporting to the head of the team. This role has a focus on the consumer sector.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a world-class investing team that cherishes independent thinking and accountability. Anyone able to demonstrate superior stock picking ability has the opportunity to gain significant responsibility. We promote based on demonstrated skill, not tenure, so accelerated progress is possible for highly talented team members.
Our Investment Analysts carry out deep, bottom-up research to identify stocks that are potentially trading well below their intrinsic value. Our analysts are empowered to put forward their best investment ideas for inclusion into our funds via our paper portfolio system. This system simulates the performance of the market, allowing real-world assessment of each analyst’s stock recommendations. In doing so our analysts’ can objectively demonstrate their ability to operate at a world-class level.
Our investment approach is fundamental, long-term and contrarian. Our ownership structure gives us the ability to remain focused on the long-term, without pressure to produce short-term results. Our independent, contrarian approach does not stop there – the fees we charge our clients are designed to reward superior performance and penalise us for underperformance; in many cases we only charge fees if we outperform the market.
Responsibilities:
- This analyst would take on primary coverage of the global media and entertainment sector with a secondary focus on the global industrials sector.
- Conducting in-depth bottom-up fundamental research to evaluate investment ideas.
- Articulating your views in reports and investment team meetings.
- Maintaining a notional paper portfolio of your best investment ideas - this will objectively measure your stock picking skill and serve as a valuable development tool.
- Playing an active part in building and maintaining a world-class investment function.
Experience, skills & qualifications:
Mindset:
- Outstanding independent judgement, with a propensity to think differently.
- Strong self-motivation and ability to thrive in an unstructured environment.
- Strong personal ethics.
- Highly analytical thinker.
Technical:
- A minimum of 2 years’ professional experience.
- Some financial literacy and demonstrated interest in investing is an advantage, but not critical.
Academic:
- We are looking for candidates with a strong intellectual foundation. A first-rate qualification from a leading institution is a useful indicator.
- Evidence of excellence and self-development in any extra-curricular activity is also a promising sign of the desired mindset.
Who we are:
We are a global firm with offices across eight countries, over 400 employees and over $50 billion in assets under management. But those numbers don’t define Orbis. It’s our values, how we do things day-by-day, and how we add value for our clients that define us.
Our investment philosophy is fundamental, long-term and contrarian. As contrarian investors, we aim to take a different perspective, and this filters into everything we do. To invest differently, you need to think differently. This is encouraged by having teams of people with different backgrounds, experiences and ways of thinking.
At Orbis we take a different approach:
- We believe investing should be accessible to all, from big private or institutional investors to everyday investors whose wealth and financial freedom we hope to build.
- We are privately owned, so that there is no short-term shareholder pressure and we can make sure we always do the right thing for clients’ long-term interest.
- We are willing to go against the herd in our investment decisions, looking for hidden and missed value and having the conviction of applying our strategy rigorously and consistently over time.
We believe it is the things we do differently that make the difference: our flagship global strategy has outperformed its benchmark over 35 years.
The same applies to our recruitment decisions. We are looking for exceptional people with a combination of intellectual curiosity, strong analytical skills, outstanding judgement, and a track record of excellence and growth whatever their chosen field. Finance or investing experience isn’t necessary to be successful with us!
As an Investment Analyst at Orbis, you will have the opportunity to develop your stock picking skills in an inclusive work environment. Career development opportunities will depend on your individual talent, progression, and interests.
