In the role of Associate Principal Health Planner, we'll count on you to:
- Lead healthcare planning and programming efforts for complex healthcare projects, from strategic planning and project initiation through design, construction, and close-out.
- Direct and coordinate the work of single-discipline and multidisciplinary teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Serve as the primary healthcare planning lead on projects of varying size, complexity, and visibility.
- Manage multiple healthcare planning assignments concurrently while maintaining high standards of quality, client service, and technical excellence.
- Collaborate with clients, users, clinicians, administrators, and project stakeholders to develop facility planning solutions that support operational efficiency, patient care, and long-term organizational goals.
- Facilitate visioning sessions, user group meetings, stakeholder workshops, and planning charrettes to define project requirements and validate planning solutions.
- Develop functional programs, space programs, workflow analyses, blocking and stacking studies, master plans, and strategic facility plans.
- Establish and maintain strong client relationships and participate in business development, marketing pursuits, interviews, and proposal development.
- Coordinate planning activities with architecture, engineering, interiors, medical equipment planning, and other consulting disciplines.
- Manage staffing resources and planning team workloads to ensure project deliverables are completed on schedule and within scope.
- Monitor project budgets, schedules, and work plans while collaborating with project management and leadership teams to achieve project objectives.
- Participate in project reviews and contribute to operational, financial, and strategic planning discussions.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance and quality control procedures for healthcare planning deliverables.
- Mentor and support the professional growth of Health Planners and other team members through coaching, knowledge sharing, and technical leadership.
- Stay current with healthcare industry trends, regulatory requirements, emerging care models, and best practices in healthcare planning and facility design.

- Promote sustainable and resilient healthcare design practices and encourage integrated planning processes from the earliest stages of project development.
- Contribute to planning strategies that support environmental performance, operational effectiveness, and long-term facility adaptability.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Healthcare Planning, Interior Design, Health Sciences, or a related field.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience in healthcare planning, architecture, or healthcare facility design.
- Minimum 7 years of project leadership and/or project management experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading healthcare planning efforts for complex healthcare facilities, including hospitals, ambulatory care centers, specialty facilities, and healthcare campuses.
- Strong understanding of healthcare operations, patient flow, clinical processes, and facility planning principles.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and effectively facilitate client and stakeholder meetings.
- Experience developing functional programs, master plans, space programs, and healthcare planning studies.
- Strong presentation, facilitation, and client relationship management skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong understanding of healthcare planning codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of local and regional healthcare markets and industry trends.
- Excellent leadership, mentoring, organizational, and communication skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant in HDR's employee-owned culture.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registered Architect (RA), Certified Healthcare Architect (CHA), EDAC, PMP, or other relevant professional certification.
- Master's degree in Architecture, Healthcare Planning, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or a related field.
- Experience with healthcare campus master planning and strategic facility planning.
- Experience in sustainable, high-performance, and regenerative healthcare design.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and planning guidelines.
- Experience with operational planning, workflow optimization, and evidence-based design methodologies.
- Understanding of building performance, low-carbon materials, resiliency planning, and future-ready healthcare environments.
- Established industry relationships and demonstrated success supporting business development activities within the healthcare sector.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or closely related field
- A minimum of 12 years related experience
- Strong organizational skills
- Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in the construction of buildings
- Understanding of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, prints, drawings and models
