The Company
Our client, a leading utilities infrastructure service provider with a revenue close to £135m and consistently high profits in recent years, is seeking a skilled Quantity Surveyor to join their team. This is a permanent position that will be based in either Potters Bar or Barking head office.
The company operates in various sectors, including power, gas, telecoms, and multi-utility. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the costs and contracts associated with construction projects within these sectors. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects while utilizing your expertise in cost control and construction management.
As a Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and managing pre & post-contract commercial and procurement management, reporting systems and procedures for a range of civil engineering and utility contracts. The Quantity Surveyor will report to the Senior/Chief Quantity Surveyor and will be responsible for evaluating, negotiating, managing, and mitigating commercial and contractual risks for the contracts.
To be successful in this role, you should have at least five years of experience as a Quantity Surveyor in the construction industry, with a preference for candidates with utility experience. You should also have a proven track record of working independently, strong negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as experience with standard forms of contract such as JCT and NEC.
Proficiency with MS Office and other applications and cost control systems is essential. You must also have a CSCS card and a minimum of 5 years experience as a Quantity Surveyor. Responsibilities:
Management of subcontractors, including negotiating rates, reconciling tender/subcontractor rates, agreeing on variations, and assessing applications
Tender submissions, including preparing, negotiating, and analyzing costs for tenders, reviewing terms and conditions, clarifying tenders, and preparing subcontract tender packages if necessary
Contract administration, including preparing monthly valuations, managing variations, arranging for payment, and preparing and assessing claims if necessary
Cost reporting, including preparing monthly reports analyzing cost vs. value for monthly CVRs
Attend company and external Contract Handover, Progress Review, and Operational meetings
Take ownership of assigned contracts and ensure contract administration by the company's Integrated Management System (IMS) and Contract Terms & Conditions
Make site visits and progress review meetings as needed
Provide commercial support to Project Managers and Site Agents
Promote the company's services and assist in creating new business
Proactively solve problems
Maintain an up-to-date understanding of technical, contractual, and commercial developments
Skills:
Previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor in civil engineering and utility contracts
Customer-focused and innovative, able to maximize contract benefits for the mutual and long-term benefit
Track record of exceeding business targets and KPIs
Ability to identify and resolve problems early on
Experience setting up and managing site-based commercial and reporting systems
