Starling technology works in a hybrid pattern from home and our three offices and we think we will be for a while to come. We're open to applications from across the UK but our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance to either our London, Southampton or Cardiff office, so that when we're able to see each other and collaborate in person again, we're ready to go!

Requirements:
Starling engineering has been DevOps from the start: our build-run teams are responsible for every aspect of the systems they own from conception and design through development, monitoring, operation, evolution. But as we've grown we developed an ever greater infrastructure and platform practice and, with it, teams that focus on observability and resilience across the platform and infrastructure. The future promises massive scale for Starling Bank and Starling Engine and these teams will grow. This is where you come in. Your responsibilities will include:
Build and run the systems we need to ensure resilience across the whole platform, using cutting edge techniques of observability and reliability engineering.
Continually enhance incident response capability through tooling and practice improvements. Drive and participate in investigations, post-mortems and ensure we never stop learning.
Collaborate with other teams in order to establish key practices in their own development lifecycle.
Participate in chaos experimentation to improve resilience. Though not necessarily required, an ideal candidate would:
be comfortable coding in at least one major language (e.g., Java, Go, Python, JavaScript)
be an inveterate problem solver able to combine some big-picture architecture with detailed detective work
have a passion to reduce toil via automation
relish taking ownership of features from idea through to production
have expertise in and enthusiasm for observability / monitoring / telemetry in modern cloud-based environments
understand and evangelise the value of measuring with indicators and objectives (SLIs / SLOs)
be conversant with concepts from domains such as Linux, networking, containerisation, distributed systems, immutable infrastructure, public clouds (particularly AWS & GCP), SRE. We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis.
